eBay recently announced a partnership with Bigcommerce, the eCommerce solution provider and, with this partnership comes the transition from eBay’s ‘Go’ product which targeted small businesses, and its eCommerce Magento software business, as well as its ProStores service which targeted small businesses that wanted to enter the eCommerce market.
The eBay partnership with Bigcommerce is a big step for both companies and one that will help eBay to target larger business customers and provide an ample market for Bigcommerce with increased attention from eCommerce developers, and IT consultants and service providers. With the Bigcommerce hosted platform and migration services, existing Go customers will enjoy a seamless migration and transfer, and new customers will enjoy stability and gain additional features and function for their eCommerce sites.
At this time, neither eBay nor Bigcommerce have revealed a customer count for transitioning Go customers, or a transition plan but it would seem that Magento and its three-product solution suite will be phased out after only three years of eBay ownership. This phase-out seems clear, in light of the fact that two of Magento’s product offerings address a medium to large enterprise market, and would be in direct competition with Bigcommerce products, as well as with Volusion and Shopify.
By making the transition to Bigcommerce, eBay puts the responsibility and technology into the hands of Bigcommerce and frees up capital and resources to pursue its core business while, at the same time, acquiring a dependable platform and framework. Bigcommerce supports customizable shopping carts, marketing tools, product features, over one hundred themes, integration capabilities for ERP, CRM and tax systems and HTML and CSS edit support, as well as credit card payment systems, and over fifty payment gateways.
The Bigcommerce solution supports couponing, search engine optimization, analytics, data security and encryption, newsletters, promotional campaigns and internet marketing techniques and email accounts, and, as such can satisfy the requirements of small and large businesses.
While the complete transition from Go, Magento and ProStores will take some time, the promise of the eBay and Bigcommerce partnership is one that will pay off for both companies and for consumers, small, medium and large businesses and IT consultants and software developers.
